Bring a cold item to share — fresh fruit, muffins, cookies, cheese & crackers, pastries, and more. Juice, coffee, and tea are provided. If you're staying to eat, we'd love your help too — bring something, set up, or clean up. When everyone brings a little, something wonderful happens!

A MONTH OF LISTENING: God Is Ready to Speak to Those Who Are Willing to Listen

Pastor Alan shared a message on Sunday, August 2nd, based on Acts 15: God is ready to speak to those who are willing to listen. He handed out a form outlining 5 different ways the Lord speaks to His people, with supporting scriptures for each point, along with 3 prayer focuses for the church to be praying — hopefully daily — throughout the month of August.

Pastor Alan invites everyone who was there that morning, and those joining online, to partner with NHC in praying daily for these important needs for our church. He's also asking everyone to write down all the ways the Lord speaks to them throughout the month, and be willing to share this with Catherine and himself at the end of August. All the replies will then be gathered and shared with the whole church.

5 WAYS GOD SPEAKS TO THOSE WHO ARE WILLING TO LISTEN:

1. Through Acts of God
Psalm 29:3-11 — The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. The voice of the LORD strikes with flashes of lightning. The voice of the LORD shakes the desert. The voice of the LORD twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, "Glory!"

Romans 1:20 — For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

2. Through the Voices of Trusted Servants
Acts 15:28 — It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements.

Proverbs 11:14 — For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisors make victory sure.

3. Through His Word
Psalm 119:105 — Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

John 5:39 — You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me.

4. Through His Holy Spirit
John 16:12-14 — But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

1 Corinthians 2:9-10 — "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him—but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God."

5. Through Divine Revelation
2 Corinthians 12:1-4 — I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows. He was caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell.

Revelation 1:10-11 — On the Lord's Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, which said: "Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea."

APPLICATION: Praying Together Through August

We're inviting everyone at NHC to pray throughout the month — for God to speak to you in any of the above 5 ways, and specifically:

  1. For God's direction for NHC for this coming year in terms of outreach events.
  2. For wisdom and unity for the NHC Council and Leadership Team concerning financial decisions.
  3. For an increase in membership and in tithes and offerings, to help meet our increasing mortgage and other expenses.
